No.5 Mona Nears Completion : 29th June
Work is continuing apace on the cosmetic restoration of No.5 Mona in the goods shed at Port St. Mary Station ahead of the 150th anniversary celebrations next month; the professional painter is in the process of applying the final gloss coats of spring green as well as the black and white lining out detail to the locomotive. The shed will be open on Saturday 1st July to view the progress as part of the celebrations for anniversary day.
Other ancillary work ongoing includes the re-fitting of smaller components, work on the connecting rods which have yet to be fitted, and the smokebox handrail which is off-site receiving attention ahead of refitting. The replica name and number plates have been fitted to the fireman’s side tank complete with new timber backing boards, and the original (obtained by auction by the Association last year) has been re-fitted to the driver’s side tank.
The railway continues to operate today and tomorrow to the standard “R” timetable ahead of the big day on Saturday when a special “X” timetable will be in force; this evening sees the popular Pie & Mash train operate to Port Erin Station with a further dining service tomorrow, Friday 30th with an oriental theme. Everything looks set for a bumper day to mark the 150th anniversary with stations dressed with bunting and floral displays.
