Brake Van E.1 (i)
The first of the batch of four-wheel brake vans were constructed by the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co., Ltd., of Saltley Works in Birmingham; this particular van was involved in an collision with a Manx Northern Railway locomotive at St. John’s in 1893 and deemed beyond repaired so was subsequently scrapped. The frames were then used to construct closed van G.7 and a replacement van taking the same number was delivered from the same manufacturer in 1893, see E.1 (ii) for details. The rendering below is based upon a proposed style of van that was to be capable of some limited passenger accomodation and was never built, the original E.1 being of standard design.
