Brake Van E.2

Second of the first initial batch of four-wheel brake vans supplied by the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co., of Saltley Works in Birmingham for the opening of the Peel Line.  Following the introduction of the first bogie passenger stock the four-wheel brake vans were eventually phased out and this particular example was  later used from 1924 as a grounded store at Santon Station where it was scrapped 1973 in situ.  The base that carried this remains at the station today as a flowerbed.  The underframes were scrapped.  The accompanying illustration shows the initial proposed van which would have encompassed one second class passenger compartment, in the event this was not commissioned.
