The “L” Series : Bolsters
Four of these small four-wheel vehicles (commonly running as two pairs in numerical sequence) were purchased from the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co., of Saltley Works in Birmingham in 1874 and were designed for carrying longer loads such as signal posts, telegraph poles and larger timber baulks; a further (and short-lived) pair were constructed in-house in 1910; they were used in pairs; each had manual parking brakes and they survived until the final years largely out of use latterly. All had a grey livery on woodwork and black metal and frames, they were numbered along their edges. Although surviving, their latter day useage appears to have been somewhat limited.
