Closed Van Gr.13 (M.N.Ry. No.16)

One of five wagons delivered for the opening of the Manx Northern Railway in September 1879 and numbered No.16 in their sequence; upon the 1905 merger with the Isle of Man Railway it was re-numbered accordingly with the small “r” prefix denoting its Ramsey Line origins, this van had ventilation distinguishing it from earlier examples.  It has been scrapped and only sister van Gr.12 of this type survives, presently in storage.

August 1958 and Gr.13 was photographed in the goods yard at Castletown Station, note the tare lettering on the bulkhead and darker livery.

In June 1956 St. John’s Station was the location for this image, seen alongside another of the former Manx Northern ventilated vans.
