About The Association
The Isle of Man Steam Railway Supporters’ Association was formed as the Manx Steam Railway Society in 1966, the year that the Isle of Man Railway closed for “essential track maintenance work”. We are the leading charity for railway preservation on the island and the only one dedicated solely to this unique railway.
We actively promote awareness and interest in the railway and undertake a wide variety of Manx steam railway heritage conservation projects alongside the day-to-day operation of the railway by the Isle of Man Government, find out more:-
About The Railway
Dating back to 1874 and running 15⅜ miles southwest from Douglas, the Isle of Man Railway’s 3’ 0” gauge line to Port Erin is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge passenger railways in regular operation anywhere in the world and still uses its original vintage locomotives and rolling stock.
This provide passengers with a truly authentic Victorian and Edwardian travel experience through the glorious Manx countryside and you can find out much more about the railway in the following sections of this website:-

Our Current Major Project
Cosmetically Restoring No.9 Douglas
We are currently restoring 1896-built No.9 Douglas to public display condition after over sixty years in storage and partially dismantled. Our fundraising target for the cosmetic restoration is £12,000. Please help us with a donation of any amount. The aim is to have the locomotive capable of being displayed later in the year if enough progress is made.
Manx Steam Railway News
Established in the earliest days of the Supporters’ Association back in 1966, the quarterly-published official journal, which incorporates all news, views and recent events on the railway as well as historical articles of interest and a selection of colour and black and white photography from various eras is automatically dispatched to paid-up members on a regular basis. For information and to submit your contributions to a future edition please contact The Editor directly.
