FROM MANX STEAM RAILWAY NEWS No.99 (AUTUMN/WINTER 1991)
It is with regret that we inform the membership of the death of Dr. Robert Preston Hendry on 18th October 1991. Born in Crosby, Liverpool 1912 Dr. Hendry practiced for many years, having served with the Royal Army Medical Corps., during the Second World War. Outside his professional career Dr. Hendry was a known and respected authority in all aspects of railways having co-written ten books with his son Robert Powell Hendry, three of which were specifically on the Isle of Man transport system.
It is with the Isle of Man Railway system the membership will best remember Dr. Hendry. A tireless campaigner for the retention of the railway, firstly with the Supporters’ Association for whom he was at one time president and then with the Isle of Man Railway Society. Latterly he was prominent in the scheme to return No.8 Fenella to steam, a scheme that will hopefully bear fruition in 1992. In conclusion it seems fitting that M.E.R. locomotive No.23 is to be named after Dr. Hendry in recognition of his time spent championing the Isle of Man and the railway systems in particular. We offer our sincere condolences to his son Robert, family and many friends.
