Brake Van E.1 (i)

E.1 was the first of the batch of three four-wheel brake vans were constructed by the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co., Ltd., of Saltley Works in Birmingham for the opening of the Peel Line in 1873; this particular van was involved in a collision with a Manx Northern Railway locomotive at St. John’s Station as early as 1893 and deemed beyond economic repair so was subsequently scrapped and a replacement provided in the form of E.1 (ii).  The underframes however were then re-used to construct closed van G.7.  Please note that the rendering below is based upon a proposed style of van that was to be capable of some limited passenger accommodation and was never built, the original E.1 being of standard design.
