Ticketing History

From its inception in 1873 the railway has used a wide variety of ticketing options, laid out in this section is a summary history of the various types used over a century and a half.  This section of our website has been developed using a comprehensive paper compiled by the late Robert Preston Hendry in 1973 when a detailed paper was compiled for the now defunct Isle of Man Railway Society and published as a foolscap handout.  This is in the process of being expanded and developed.

The subject of ticket types is one of the most convoluted aspects of the history of the railway and evidence occasionally comes to light which reveals even more types of ticket.  Traditional card tickets were still in use well into the 1990s prior to a cash register system being implemented and today the modern Ticketer system is used to issue all tickets which take the form of a till receipt.  Souvenir card tickets are only now issued for the dining train.
