The “K” Series : Cattle Vans
This series of wagons were designed for the transportation of livestock and were similar to the later “G” vans. The first two were delivered for the opening of the Peel Line in 1873, and of all the various series of rolling stock on the line their history is perhaps the most complicated with various modifications made to certain vans over the the years and various re-numberings with vehicles constructed using frames of other stock. None survive today but it has been mooted that the Supporters’ Association may take on the reconstruction of one, so that the railway ultimately has an example of each type of stock in their possession. The last example survived until what is believed to be around 1965 but their use from around 1960 appears to have dropped off in favour of the versatile “G”s which saw use for several years afterwards.
