“Whistle-Up” Event, 1st January 2025
“Whistle-Up” Event, 1st January 2025
To start the new year the railway will be participating in a nationwide “Whistle-Up” event on Wednesday 1st January 2025 at Douglas Station. For the event it is proposed that No.11 Maitland will be in steam for an event which will also see the workshops and running shed open from 11.00am for public inspection and it is proposed that the Supporters’ Association will provide refreshments for visitors. The public are invited to walk down the platform from 10.30am and it is intended to conclude the event around 1.00pm.This looks set to ensure the railway begins the year in style by participating in a nationwide event with many other railways across the country.
The event has been organised by the Heritage Railway Association who state on their official website:-
“...We want to start Railway 200 off as it should go on, by getting as many heritage railways involved as possible. We’re starting that by reviving an old tradition dating back the days of steam. The year will kick-off with an evocative “Whistle-Up” of vintage locomotives at 12 noon on 1st January. The event is expected to take place on heritage railways across the U.K. and is being spearheaded by Heritage Railway Association members.
This will be a great chance to tell your visitors and stakeholders (and potential visitors or stakeholders) that you’re a part of Railway 200. It’ll look great on social media, and might even be of interest to your local broadcast media too. It’s not just about steam. We’re keen that every heritage railway or tramway gets involved. So if you’ve got a horn or a bell rather than a whistle on your motive power - don’t worry; this event is still for you. Several railways have already committed to being a part of the event - register your interest today and don't miss out on this momentous occasion”.
