Period Platform Furniture
Period Platform Furniture
As part of the landmark anniversary of the South Line in 2024 thae Association arranged for the manufacture of some new period style platform benches, six in total, and prepared them for use at various stations along the line. These were based on the pattern of an existing bench and each carry the station name on the backrest as was traditional for many years.
The benches are all painted in the style of each station, and metalwork is all galvanised and powder-coated. These were installed at Santon Station, Ballasalla Station, Castletown Station, Port St. Mary Station and Port Erin Station with the objective being to provide further such hard-wearing benches at other stations in the future.
The benches were manufactured by Island Ironcraft and it is hoped that the remaining stations can be so fitted in the future; the Association has also undertaken to provide the upkeep and maintenance of these benches, which we believe adds to the period feel of the stations, replacing as they do the more modern looking park benches installed in recent times along the line. The project is in addition to the works already carried out by our volunteers at Ballabeg Station, The Level, Port St. Mary Station and in the Railway Museum.
