Two four-wheel carriages mounted on a new underframe supplied by the Metropolitan Carriage & Wagon Co., Ltd., of Saltley Works in Birmingham in 1919, F.53 was latterly restricted to use on the schools trains and with withdrawn in 1964 being surplus to requirements.  The bodies were removed from the underframes in 1968 and renumbered as R.1, in this form they were sold to the Ffestiniog Railway in 1974 and departed the island.
